William Lane Craig Named in Biola’s First Endowed Chair

By Joanna Wu

An endowed chair has been established in recognition of William Lane Craig, a world-renowned philosopher and theologian who has been teaching at Biola’s Talbot School of Theology for more than 20 years. Funded through a generous donation, the William Lane Craig Endowed Chair in Philosophy will permanently create a faculty position at Talbot in honor of Craig’s ongoing legacy. It is the first endowed chair established at Biola.

Lawrence “Wayne” Swindel and his wife, Sandra “Ronnie,” have generously offered a planned gift of $3 million for the endowed position, which met more than half of Biola’s campaign goal for endowed chairs and lectureships. This gift will support Biola’s ambition to become a global center for Christian thought and continue its mission to cultivate and disseminate influential scholarship that will speak to critical world issues from a solidly biblical perspective.

Craig, research professor of philosophy at Talbot, is popularly known for his many public debates, including one with the late popular atheist Christopher Hitchens; his many books, including Reasonable Faith: Christian Truth and Apologetics; and his wide-reaching online ministry at Reasonable Faith.

The Swindels are personal friends and long-time supporters of Craig and his wife, Jan, and have sat under Craig’s teaching in the Defenders class at their home church in Georgia. Wayne Swindel hopes the establishment of this chair will carry Craig’s legacy into the future and provide greater opportunities for academics following in Craig’s path.

“Bill has done some outstanding work, particularly in the last half century — and continues to do so now — through his ministry at Reasonable Faith,” Swindel said. “I’d like to maintain remembrance of those things going forward for his work in philosophy and church doctrine.”

With this generous gift, this endowed chair will ensure a permanent faculty position, providing greater access to new scholarly opportunities for both faculty and students. Biola will continue its efforts to influence the world of ideas by developing funds for endowed chairs and lectureships.

“Hopefully, going forward, the chair will become fully established and provide incentive and motivation for others to follow a similar route and make contributions that would establish chairs in other people’s names,” Swindel said.

    Dear Mr. Craig,

    What an honour!

I am very pleased not only for you, Biola and grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Swindel, but to see how this can truly help the Church worldwide. We Christians desperately need more and more educated believers at the most advanced levels of learning, to help make the present generation know the full, wonderful truth of the Gospel. As Razi Zacharias expressed it: "Let My People Think".

    God bless this ministry.

I am very pleased to see this kind of effort to publish the works of the great men of faith such as Dr. Craig.
I thank firt and formost our dear Lord for letting us get this wonderfull aspect of the good news!, when I first got to know computers I was doubtful of their use, although could be good it was attacked by evil spirits and the fight was hard, You couldn't get to your info without having to fight against pornographers, but thanks to our Lord that fight was won! The Lord showed me this medium could be used for the good fight by spreading His Holy word, and efforts like this are good proof of it!, Thanks be given and blessings to all involved, our Lord knows who they all are... Dear Prof. Craig,

    Congratulations to this well-deserved honour.

My wife and I have been so blessed by your teachings via your podcasts in Reasonable Faith. You are truly a scholar and the way you articulate Christian doctrine and theology is so wonderful as well as powerful.

May God continue to use you powerfully and we look forward to attending your classes in Biola in not too distant future.

    Dr. Bruce Yung. PhD.

    Dear Dr. Craig

You have not only been one of the greatest Christian minds of the 21st century but also one of its greatest communicators. For this reason, one cannot talk about the state of contemporary apologetics without mentioning your name. Well deserved.

My only hope is that the many apologists you have helped to create will continue to come together for the long haul. We already have great organizations and networks connecting them (such as Reasonable Faith, Ratio Christi, and RZIM). May we continue to grow into a bastion of believers building faith, breaking barriers, and influencing influencers.

Again, great job Dr. Craig. Wayne and Ronnie Swindel are some smart folks. ;) Their actions will have great effects for many years to come. Thanks to them for supporting such a great cause!

    David Ochabski, MA
